Mitchell and the UFO: Klaatu Barada Nikto

“The UFO phenomenon is real.”

  Edgar Mitchell.

Mitchell on the MoonEd Mitchell might not be an immediately familiar name. He was an astronaut with a Ph.D. from MIT and was the sixth man to walk on the moon. He also grew up in Artesia, a small town not far from Roswell, New Mexico. With that accident of residence, it’s no surprise he’d look to the stars for a career and later become a ufologist.

An Anniversary

This is the 70th anniversary of the Roswell incident. On Tuesday, July 8, 1947, Roswell AAF issued the following press release, “The many rumors regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc through the cooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff’s office of Chaves County. The flying object landed on a ranch near Roswell sometime last week. Not having phone facilities, the rancher stored the disc until such time as he was able to contact the sheriff’s office, who in turn notified Maj. Jesse A. Marcel of the 509th Bomb Group Intelligence Office. Action was immediately taken and the disc was picked up at the rancher’s home. It was inspected at the Roswell Army Air Field and subsequently loaned by Major Marcel to higher headquarters.”

That simple press release created a controversy that’s alive today. The UFO true-believers and the UFO deniers continue to club one another with information or misinformation designed to make their case. Government explanations and increasingly outrageous conspiracy theories all seem equally implausible.  But you should think twice when someone as credible as Ed Mitchell weighs in.

Wikileaks and a UFO

Mitchell didn’t mince words, “I happen to be privileged enough to be in on the fact that we have been visited on this planet.” He stated government officials have met with aliens, exploited alien technology and have cooperated with aliens to maintain world peace. Thanks to Wikileaks we know he sought a meeting with John Podesta to discuss Vatican interest in aliens. In that same email, his representative wrote, “We work with specific ETI from a contiguous universe. They are nonviolent and in complete obedience to God. Our ETI’s connection to zero point energy is obvious in that their purpose is to guide Edgar’s international Quantrek science team to apply their zero point energy research for humanity, to move away from the use of fossil fuels which are so deleterious to our fragile planet.”

Was Mitchell a well-credentialed nut, or was he on to something? We probably won’t know until Oprah interviews Klaatu. But we shouldn’t be too dismissive. Our own technology is the best proof that visitors from other solar systems might have already arrived. Scientific breakthroughs over the last few decades leave little doubt that with time, we can master just about anything. Why should we assume we’re the only life form capable of extraordinary things in a universe we can’t begin to fully comprehend? Besides, there’s nothing wrong with expansive thinking. Our world—and our universe for that matter—are only as small as we make them.  So keep looking for that saucer in the sky and repeating, “Klaatu Barada Nikto.”      —Ebert
