Genesis 22: Can You Hear Me Now?

Genesis 22: 1.

“God said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.'”

God called and Abraham answered. Abraham’s answer is instructive. He didn’t say, “What do you want?”  Or, “What do you need?” Or, “Get back to me later.” He said, “Here I am.” The answer is grounded in the present. It doesn’t anticipate future events or presuppose something in a future that can only be imagined. Abraham also doesn’t defer God. He doesn’t place a higher value on his time than on God’s.  Instead, Abraham says he’s here—bound by this time and in this place. And in the words, “I am,”  he reflects his unique humanity—his own individuality.  God called and Abraham answered.               —The Houston Pilgrim
